In a year that witnessed the birth of titles like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Mortal Kombat 4, and Grand Theft Auto , the company responsible for the creation of Blood had another idea that would separate itself from the recently mentioned games.

The goal was to produce an adventure that, in a market dominated by releases with very adult or violent themes, can be enjoyed by the family and appeal to an audience of any age. At the end of the day, with a beautiful drawing and a great script, Claw would arrive. The plot of this funny delivery circulates around the main character, an anthropomorphic pirate cat, and his search for the 9 lives amulet and its 9 gems, relics that, when combined, give the user near-immortality.

But this is not an easy task: the feline not only has competition but also must escape from prison. As the adventure progresses, the player gradually forgets that he is dealing with anthropomorphic animals and comes to consider them human. This is because every character in this title is meticulously written. As you make your way through the various levels of Claw , you\’ll be whisked back to the days when you fell to your death in Super Mario Brothers and countless other games like it.

This is a bad sign for parents, husbands, wives, boyfriends, and girlfriends Like many other games of this genre, there are waypoints. If you can make it to them, they become your new starting points when you die. Some of these waypoints automatically save the game, and you can later access them from the main menu. Waypoints are represented by a black pirate flag conveniently stuck in the ground.

There are the usual moving platforms, disappearing stones, swinging vines, and chains to deal with. Captain Claw must use perfect timing, and cat-like reflexes translation: get a decent game pad to get by the tricks and traps to complete his quest. Of course, no game of this type would be complete without bubbling tar, burning lava, and piranha-infested waters to take away one of those 9 lives.

I found the moving platforms with timed spikes in them quite refreshing and painful. Claw offers the player a number of cool attacks to take care of the onslaught of cohorts looking to put Captain Claw in the vet\’s office. Captain Claw\’s first line of defense is his sword, and hand-to-hand combat. He can use them while crouching, jumping, etc. There are also a number of swords that are imbued with elemental powers such as fire, lightning, and ice.

Beyond his sword, he has several expendable tools — dynamite for blowing bad guys up, a handy pistol he likes to scream \”eat lead\” when shooting , and an item called \”Magic Claw\” which shoots a cat-claw-like projectile toward enemies. If dynamite and swordplay won\’t take care of the problem, get close to an enemy or explosive barrel, and hit Z. You\’ve just picked up the enemy or barrel. Throw it at something for fun! For the tougher enemies, you may have to do it a number of times to get it to effectively kill the bad guys.

A simple toss on some nearby spikes should remedy that problem, though. Multiplayer 64 players! I only tested the DirectPlay capabilities of Claw , and found them to be direct and easy to use.

Well, Claw is one of these greats that just didn\’t get any traction, though it\’s just as good if not just plain better than Sonic or Earthworm Jim or so many others! Well here\’s the deal, the world has evolved a little differently than we are used to, so much so that Cocker Spaniards are the dominant race on Earth.

As such, you\’ll play a cat pirate captain yap, you\’ll be the underdog, sic! Gameplay style Claw is all about platforming, which is delivered in incredibly fluid and yet organic animation sets, within backdrops that are lovingly drawn and very detailed. Nope, though, this isn\’t a 2D game, it\’s all 3D, but it\’s well done. Come to think maybe that was its undoing, that it didn\’t use an actual hand drawn world, but well, I guess you have to take it for what it is.

Monolith doesn\’t fail to impress with Claw and are certainly becoming more impressive as a whole than many companies are already. Kudos also have to go out to Takrajimasha, Inc.

All this praise isn\’t to say Claw is perfect, the game has some annoying \”flaws. Claw , like most side-scrollers, will let you continue from locations when you pass a flag on the way should you die and have another life.

However, Claw only contains two actual save game locations in each level, so if you die completely, you usually end up having to fight through a hideous amount of territory to get back to where you were before. In addition, the game doesn\’t offer up as many extra lives as most games do, and finding extra magic ammo is rare. These few \”flaws\” in Claw are enough to make the game incredibly difficult but overall, still addictingly fun to play.

Scenarios include indoor and outdoor areas like city streets, forests, a large ship, underwater and more, all of them drawn with hi-quality cartoon graphics. If this is the first time you hear about this lovely cat or just some childhood memories came back to you, do yourself a favor and add this fantastic classic to your library, you can thank me later.
